How to Record Your Stream with OBS in 2025 (Without Losing Quality)

A 3-hour Twitch VOD compresses to roughly 3.5 Mbps - about 6% of the bitrate OBS can write to a local NVMe drive during the same session. Most streamers lose that original footage forever because they never configure OBS's recording output separately from the stream output. OBS has two independent encode pipelines, and the recording one has almost no constraints beyond what your storage can absorb.
This guide walks through every setting - encoder, container, audio tracks, and drive setup - so your recordings come off the stream in near-lossless quality regardless of what platform you broadcast to.
Why Recording Settings Are Completely Separate from Stream Settings
Streaming bitrate is capped by your upload bandwidth. A typical home connection with a 30 Mbps upload is already generous; most platforms cap ingest at 6,000-8,000 kbps anyway. Recording bitrate is capped by your disk write speed, which on a modern SATA SSD is 400-500 MB/s - or about 4,000,000 kbps. That is a 500x difference in available headroom.
In OBS, go to Settings → Output and switch the Output Mode to Advanced. You will see two tabs: Streaming and Recording. Every number on the Recording tab is independent. Changes there do not affect your stream, and vice versa.
Step 1: Choose Your Recording Encoder
The right encoder depends on your hardware and what you plan to do with the footage:
- NVENC HEVC (H.265) - Best balance for most setups. Available on any Nvidia GPU from the GTX 10 series (Pascal, 2016) onward. HEVC produces files 40-50% smaller than H.264 at the same visual quality. A 3-hour 1080p60 gaming recording at 60,000 kbps takes roughly 81 GB; the HEVC version of the same content at equivalent quality is around 45-50 GB.
- AMF HEVC (AMD) / QuickSync HEVC (Intel) - Equivalent to NVENC but on AMD Polaris+ and Intel Skylake+. Same quality advantage over H.264. Use this if you have a modern AMD or Intel GPU.
- x264 / x265 software encoders - Higher CPU usage, but x264 at CRF 0 is mathematically lossless. Use on a dedicated recording machine or a high-core-count CPU that has headroom to spare. Not recommended while gaming due to frame time impact.
- Lossless (NVENC Lossless mode) - Zero quality loss, but files are very large: 30 minutes of 1080p60 can reach 50-80 GB. Reserve this for footage you plan to edit professionally in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere.
For the vast majority of streamers, NVENC HEVC at 50,000-80,000 kbps CBR is the right choice. It offloads encoding to the GPU with minimal frame time impact, produces manageable file sizes, and retains quality that is indistinguishable from lossless to the human eye in typical streaming content.
Step 2: Use MKV, Not MP4
This is the single most important container choice you will make. MP4 writes its index block (the moov atom) only at the end of the file. If OBS crashes, the power goes out, or Windows decides to restart for an update at minute 58 of a 60-minute session, every frame written to that MP4 is unrecoverable. The file will not open.
MKV writes a recoverable index on every keyframe - typically every 2 seconds. A crash loses at most the last few seconds of footage. Set Recording Format to MKV in Settings → Output → Recording.
After your stream ends, convert to MP4 for upload or editing compatibility using OBS's built-in remux tool: File → Remux Recordings. Select the MKV, click Remux. It rewraps the file in under a minute with no re-encoding - the video data is identical, only the container changes. This gives you the broad compatibility of MP4 without accepting the crash risk during a live session.

Step 4: Enable Separate Audio Tracks
Recording separate audio tracks is one of the least-used OBS features and one of the most useful for post-production. In Settings → Output → Recording, increase the Audio Track count from 1 to at least 4. Then open Advanced Audio Properties (gear icon in the Audio Mixer) and assign each source to a dedicated track:
- Track 1 - All audio mixed together (the master; what viewers heard live)
- Track 2 - Microphone only
- Track 3 - Desktop audio / game audio only
- Track 4 - Discord or party chat only
All tracks are embedded in the same MKV file - there is no extra disk space cost. In DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, or any standard NLE, you import the MKV and all 4 tracks appear as independent audio streams. You can boost the mic, cut Discord entirely from a highlight clip, or re-balance game audio in a VOD edit without touching the original mix. This retroactively fixes audio mistakes you made live.
Step 5: Storage and Drive Speed
Recording 1080p60 at 60,000 kbps generates roughly 450 MB per minute. A 3-hour stream produces approximately 81 GB of data. Your recording drive needs to sustain the write throughput without dropping frames.

Record to a secondary drive, never the OS drive. Windows page file activity, system writes, and background software all compete for I/O on the OS drive. Micro-stutter in recordings is almost always caused by I/O contention, not encoder load. A dedicated SATA SSD costs around $30-40 and completely eliminates this issue.
Recording and Streaming at the Same Time
OBS runs the stream encoder and the recording encoder as two independent pipelines. When you click Start Recording while already streaming, both outputs encode simultaneously from the same composed canvas - your game, webcam, overlays, and browser sources are all baked into both the stream and the recording.
On hardware from 2020 onward with a dedicated GPU, running NVENC for both the stream and recording adds roughly 5-10% more GPU utilization per encode job - well within comfortable headroom on a mid-range card. The important thing is to use NVENC for the recording encoder, not x264, when encoding both outputs simultaneously. Software encoding two 1080p60 streams at the same time on a gaming CPU (6-8 cores) will cause dropped frames.
Check OBS's Stats panel (View → Stats) after starting both outputs. Watch Dropped Frames and Rendering Lag. Both should stay at 0% for the first 5 minutes of a session. If either climbs above 0.5%, reduce the recording bitrate by 10,000 kbps and test again.
Getting Overlay Effects Into Your Recording

Common Recording Problems and Fixes
Recording looks pixelated in fast-motion scenes. Fast-paced content with particle effects, explosions, or rapid camera movement compresses poorly at low bitrates. Increase recording bitrate to 60,000-80,000 kbps, or switch from H.264 to HEVC for 40-50% better compression at the same visual quality.
File is corrupt and won't open after a crash. This happens when recording in MP4 format. Switch to MKV going forward. For an existing corrupt MP4, run it through ffmpeg: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy output.mkv. ffmpeg can often recover partial data that a video player cannot read directly.
Dropped frames when recording and streaming together. Switch the recording encoder from x264 to NVENC or AMF - hardware encoders add almost no CPU overhead. If you're already using NVENC, try enabling OBS's "Separate Encoder" mode in advanced output settings, which isolates the recording encode to a separate thread.
Audio drifts out of sync on recordings over 1 hour. Enable "Synchronize audio to frame timing" in Settings → Advanced. Long recordings can develop audio drift when the audio and video clocks diverge slightly over time. This setting forces OBS to re-align them periodically.
File sizes are too large to store long sessions. Switch from H.264 to HEVC. At the same perceived quality, HEVC files are 40-50% smaller. A 3-hour 1080p60 session that produces 130 GB in H.264 typically produces 70-80 GB in HEVC, with no visible quality difference on standard displays.

Stream and recording settings are independent pipelines in OBS. Streaming is constrained by upload bandwidth; recording is constrained only by your disk.
