Kick Overlay Setup Guide for OBS 2025

Kick streamers who run no overlay effects lose viewers 18-22% faster in the first two minutes of a session compared to channels with visible on-screen activity, according to retention data shared by Kick's creator team in early 2025. The setup uses two OBS features you may already know: Browser Source for the transparent overlay canvas and Custom Browser Dock for the control panel. No third-party software, no browser extensions, and no recurring subscription are required.

What You Get: Overlay vs. Dock

Before diving into steps, it helps to understand the two-piece architecture. OverlayMax AI gives every streamer two URLs on signup:

• Overlay URL - a transparent 1920×1080 web page that renders animated effects (confetti, hearts, fireworks, and 11 more) directly on top of your stream canvas. Your viewers see these effects. You add it as a Browser Source in OBS and forget about it.
• Dock URL - a control panel that lives inside OBS as a floating dock panel. You see it; your viewers do not. It contains your hotkey grid, the live event feed from Kick, and the blocked-viewer list.

The two URLs belong to the same session. Effects triggered in the dock appear on the overlay within 50-100 ms. The dock and the overlay stay in sync on their own, so there is nothing to configure or troubleshoot on your side.

Step 1: Create Your Account

Go to overlaymax.fastocloud.com/signup and enter your email address. A magic link arrives in your inbox within 30 seconds. Click it and you land on your profile page. No password to set or remember.

Your account is pre-loaded with 9 default hotkey slots already bound to built-in effects - confetti, hearts, fireworks, stars, celebration, fire, snow, sparkle, and explosion. You can go live with these immediately without changing anything. The full catalog contains 14 named effects; you can remap any slot on the Hotkeys tab.

Step 2: Connect Your Kick Account

On your profile page, find the Kick section and click Connect. You will be redirected to Kick's OAuth flow. Log in with your Kick credentials and grant the requested permissions. OverlayMax AI stores the OAuth token in its database to subscribe to your channel's events when you start a session.

If you also stream on TikTok, you can connect a TikTok username from the same profile page simultaneously. Both platforms feed into the same dock and overlay session - Kick gifts and TikTok likes appear in the same event feed, and hotkey buttons fire effects across both streams at once. Step 3: Add the Overlay URL as a Browser Source in OBS

This is the part that puts animated effects on your stream canvas:

1. In OBS, right-click your scene in the Scenes panel and select Add → Browser (or click + under Sources).
2. Give it a name like OverlayMax Effects.
3. Paste your Overlay URL from the OBS Setup tab on your profile.
4. Set Width to 1920 and Height to 1080.
5. Check Shutdown source when not visible to free browser memory when you switch to a scene that doesn't use the overlay.
6. Click OK. In the Sources list, drag the Browser Source to the top so effects render above your game capture and webcam.

The overlay background is fully transparent - your viewers will only see the animated effects, not a coloured box. OBS composites the transparent layer cleanly over everything below it. You do not need to add any chroma-key filter for the built-in effects.

If you upload custom PNG or GIF assets with transparency, those also render with their alpha channel intact. Opaque images (JPG, WebP without alpha) are displayed on a green background so OBS can apply a chroma-key filter if needed - this is called out on the upload screen.

Step 4: Add the Dock URL as a Custom Browser Dock in OBS

The dock is your live control panel. Adding it in OBS means you never need to open a separate browser window:

1. In OBS, go to View → Docks → Custom Browser Docks.
2. Click the + button to add a new dock.
3. Name it OverlayMax (or anything you like).
4. Paste your Dock URL from the OBS Setup tab on your profile.
5. Click Apply. The dock opens as a floating panel. Drag and dock it alongside your Scenes panel or on a second monitor.

Once OBS is closed and reopened, the dock URL persists and the panel restores automatically. You do not need to re-add it each session.

Step 5: Customize Your Hotkey Slots

The 9 default slots work out of the box, but most streamers remap at least a few to match their stream personality. On your profile page, open the Hotkeys tab:

• Built-in effects - choose from 14 named animations: confetti, hearts, fireworks, stars, celebration, fire, snow, sparkle, explosion, rainbow, lightning, bubbles, petals, coins. Each slot has a dropdown to switch.
• Custom assets - upload your own PNG, JPG, WebP, or animated GIF (up to 5 MB per file, 50 files per account). A streamer mascot GIF bouncing on screen when a viewer subscribes is a common use. Transparent PNGs render with alpha; no chroma-key filter needed in OBS.
• Empty slots - leave any slot empty if you only need 4-5 active effects. Empty slots render as greyed-out buttons in the dock and are harmless to click.

Changes to hotkey slots apply immediately. You do not need to restart OBS or refresh the dock. The next time you click that slot button in the dock, the updated effect fires.

Step 6: Go Live and Use the Dock

Start your Kick stream in OBS as normal. Within 3-5 seconds of the stream starting, the status pill at the top of the OverlayMax dock switches from Offline to Live. That means the dock and your overlay are connected and ready.

From here you have three tools during your stream:

Hotkey grid - the 3×3 button panel at the top of the dock. Click any slot to instantly fire that effect on your stream canvas. These are free and unlimited. Click as many times as you want during a hype moment - fireworks on a sub, confetti on a raid, hearts when your regular viewers show up.

Event feed - a live stream of your Kick channel's chat messages, follows, subscriptions, and gifts appearing as cards below the hotkey grid. Use the filter checkboxes in the toolbar to hide event types you don't want to see (for example, hide individual "like" events on a busy stream to reduce noise). Your filter choices are remembered across sessions.

Generate AI button - each event card has a Generate AI button. Click it to spend one AdHunters credit and receive an AI-matched overlay effect suggestion. A 500-bit cheer generates something different from a raid or a first-time follow. You decide whether to Apply or Dismiss the suggestion. The AI is entirely optional - the hotkey grid is free forever.

Blocking Disruptive Viewers

Any chat card in the dock has a Block button. Clicking it adds that viewer to your block list server-side. Their messages stop appearing in your dock immediately and no longer consume your AI credits. The block list is managed from the Blocked drawer in the dock - swipe it open to review and unblock anyone. This is separate from Kick's native moderation tools and applies only to your OverlayMax dock, not to Kick's chat display.

On a Kick stream with active gifting, streamers typically see 15-40 chat events per minute during peak engagement. The per-type filter and block list together let you reduce that to only the events you actually want to react to.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Overlay effects not appearing on stream: Confirm the Browser Source is positioned above your game capture and webcam in the Sources list. Effects render in the correct Z-order only when the overlay source is at the top. Also verify the overlay source is not hidden (the eye icon in OBS is enabled).

Dock shows "Offline" after going live: A session must be active before the WebSocket connects. Make sure you started a session from your profile page - not just added the dock URL to OBS. If you go live before starting a session, refresh the dock panel once and the status will update. See the FAQ for a step-by-step of the session start flow.

Event cards not appearing in the dock: Confirm your Kick account is connected on your profile page (green "Connected" status). If you recently revoked OverlayMax's Kick OAuth token via kick.com/settings/connections, reconnect it from the profile page. Events only arrive while an active session is running.

Custom GIF rendering on green background: This happens for opaque image formats (JPG, WebP without alpha) that were uploaded as custom assets. Add a Chroma Key filter to the overlay Browser Source in OBS targeting the green background (#00ff00). Alternatively, export your image as a PNG with a transparent background and re-upload it - transparent PNGs render without any background.
